Christmas in Marbella feels different. The days are mild and bright, the Old Town glows at night, and the festive season runs all the way to 6 January. Whether you live here or you’re visiting for a few weeks, this guide covers the best things to do in Marbella at Christmas, from the lights and markets to New Year’s Eve and the Three Kings parade.
Marbella Christmas Lights in the Old Town
The season starts when the Marbella Christmas lights are switched on, usually on the last weekend of November. A small parade winds through the Old Town. Then the lights come on to live flamenco and a zambomba, the Andalusian Christmas sing-along. They stay on until 6 January.
The best time to walk the Old Town is just after sunset. Start at Plaza de los Naranjos and wander the white lanes around it. Stop for churros with thick hot chocolate. On weekends you’ll often hear villancicos, the traditional Spanish carols, in the squares
The Best Christmas Markets in Marbella
The main Marbella Christmas market fills Alameda Park and Avenida del Mar, the boulevard lined with Dalí sculptures that runs down to the sea. Expect wooden stalls with handmade gifts, ornaments, turrón, polvorones and mulled wine. Go after dark, when the lights are on.
Puerto Banús hosts its own Christmas market along the marina from early December, with gourmet food stands and activities for children. For something more local, try San Pedro de Alcántara. The market around Plaza de la Iglesia is calmer and full of homemade treats.
Look out for the belenes too. These are the nativity scenes Spain takes very seriously. The municipal belén in Alameda Park and the displays in the Old Town churches are worth a visit, especially with children.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Marbella
In Spain, the big family meal is Nochebuena, on the evening of 24 December. Many locals go to midnight mass afterwards. Christmas Day itself is slower and often spent outdoors.
If you’d rather not cook, Marbella has plenty of choice. Hotels along the Golden Mile and in Nueva Andalucía serve festive menus on both days. Beach restaurants open for long seafood lunches by the water. Book early. The best tables for Christmas in Marbella are usually gone by the start of December.
New Year’s Eve in Marbella
At midnight on 31 December, Spain eats twelve grapes, one for each chime of the clock. Each grape is said to bring a lucky month. Choose small, seedless ones. The chimes are faster than you think.
Plaza de los Naranjos and the seafront around Avenida del Mar are the classic places to spend New Year’s Eve in Marbella with locals. If you prefer a gala dinner, the hotels and beach clubs from the Golden Mile to Puerto Banús all host celebrations. Many sell out weeks ahead.
The Three Kings Parade in Marbella
For Spanish families, 6 January matters as much as Christmas Day. On the evening of 5 January, the Three Kings arrive with the Cabalgata de Reyes. Floats roll through the streets and the kings throw sweets to the crowd. In Puerto Banús, they have been known to arrive by boat.
The next morning, children open their presents and families share roscón de reyes, a ring-shaped sweet bread with a small figurine hidden inside. Whoever finds it is said to have good luck for the year. Then the lights come down and the season ends.
Spending the Winter in Marbella
More and more of our clients spend the whole winter in Marbella, not just the summer. They arrive in early December and stay until the Three Kings, or longer. A villa with a heated pool, a terrace that catches the winter sun and an easy drive to the Old Town makes all the difference.
If you’re thinking about a Christmas holiday rental in Marbella, or a home of your own for winters to come, our team can help. Our concierge can also stock your fridge, book your festive dinners and arrange everything before you land.
