5 New Rules Introduced in the UAE in 2024: What You Need to Know

The UAE, known for its rapid growth and forward-thinking policies, has introduced several new regulations in 2024 to align with global standards and cater to its residents’ evolving needs. From environmental reforms to driving policies, these rules reflect the country’s commitment to progress.

1. Golden Visa Updates: Revised Investment Thresholds

Previously, the UAE Golden Visa program required a minimum investment of AED 10 million in property or other qualifying assets. However, 2024 has seen the criteria restructured to make the scheme more accessible. Property investments now require a minimum threshold of AED 2 million for visa eligibility, encouraging middle-income investors to participate. This move aims to attract more foreign nationals, strengthen the real estate market, and enhance long-term residency opportunities for skilled professionals.

2. E-scooter Restrictions on Public Transport

E-scooters have grown in popularity for their convenience and eco-friendliness. Until 2023, users freely carried them on metro and tram systems. In 2024, stricter regulations have been introduced to ban e-scooters on these transport modes, citing safety and space concerns. The restriction emphasizes designated storage facilities near stations, encouraging safer usage without disrupting public transport services.

3. Plastic Bag Ban: A Move Toward Sustainability

Building on earlier efforts like the 2022 introduction of plastic bag charges, the UAE has now implemented a nationwide ban on single-use plastics. Retailers and consumers must transition to biodegradable or reusable alternatives. Exceptions include items like medical packaging and specialized plastics. This initiative underscores the UAE’s environmental priorities and aligns with global sustainability goals, reducing plastic waste by millions of tons annually.

4. Dubai Mall Paid Parking: Modernizing Accessibility

Dubai Mall, previously renowned for offering free parking, has introduced automated toll-based parking charges in 2024. Visitors are allotted a free period, beyond which progressive rates apply. This change addresses overcrowding, ensuring fair usage of parking facilities and improving overall mall accessibility. Alternative incentives, like free parking for mall members or shoppers spending over a threshold amount, maintain customer satisfaction while managing demand.

5. Lower Driving Age and Stricter Penalties

Previously, the legal driving age in the UAE was 18. In a groundbreaking shift, the minimum age has been lowered to 17 in 2024, accompanied by stricter licensing processes. Enhanced penalties for traffic violations, including reckless driving and mobile phone use while driving, aim to reduce road accidents. These updates cater to younger drivers’ needs while ensuring road safety through rigorous enforcement and education campaigns.

Moving Forward: Embracing Change for a Better UAE

These new regulations symbolize the UAE’s adaptability and commitment to balancing economic growth, safety, and sustainability. Residents and visitors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these changes to embrace a more modern and responsible living environment. Each rule reflects a strategic decision to enhance life quality, foster innovation, and ensure the UAE remains a global leader in urban and economic development.

We help our customers negotiate and compare properties based on their unique needs and preferences, completely free of charge. We assist our clients throughout the entire process, including the legal sections, together with our partners at the best law frms. We have all the right contacts with legal agents, banks, craftsmen, cleaning companies, and other local operators to assure a safe and convenient process for our clients.

Our vision is to become the most attractive brokerage firm globally, based on the most important places in the world linked to each other, forming a solid business ecosystem between Estate, Selected, Rentals, Conferences, Concierge and Development.

What does our ecosystem mean for you? Imagine that you rent a house, fall in love with it, but cannot afford it and it is not for sale. We will assist you in purchasing an apartment.
