The recent recognition of Marbella as a European Tourism Destination of Honour by the Arab League Tourism Organisation (ATO) has further cemented the strong bonds between the Spanish coastal town and the Arab world. This prestigious accolade, bestowed by an organization representing 22 countries, underscores Marbella’s growing importance as a premier destination for Arab tourists and investors alike.
In a ceremony held at the Marbella Town Hall, Dr. Bandar bin Fahd Al-Fuhaid, President of the ATO, presented the award to Marbella’s Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz. The ATO’s decision to honor Marbella was based on the town’s reputation as “a benchmark of excellence worldwide” and its dedication to providing exceptional “care and attention” to Arab visitors, elevating it to “the most distinguished city in high-quality tourism.”
Mayor Muñoz emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, “This distinction will mean that we have even more presence in some of the countries. We have received numerous visitors for many years.” The award not only acknowledges Marbella’s current status but also paves the way for increased tourism and investment from Arab nations.
Dr. Al-Fuhaid’s remarks during the ceremony hinted at the possibility of establishing a permanent ATO presence in Marbella. He expressed, “We feel so at home that we are considering the possibility of creating a permanent support office for visitors from the 22 countries of the Arab League, with maximum collaboration to help them invest, and even help in the tourist part, that may correspond from the International Tourism Academy to Marbella.” This potential development could significantly enhance Marbella’s appeal to Arab tourists and investors, providing them with on-the-ground support and resources.
The meeting between Al-Fuhaid and Muñoz covered various aspects of cooperation, including the exchange of expertise in tourism services, training and qualification of tourism sector workers, and increasing tourism investments. These discussions highlight the mutual benefits that both Marbella and Arab countries stand to gain from this strengthened relationship.
In a notable development, Al-Fuhaid revealed that the ATO, in partnership with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), is considering establishing a training and development academy in Marbella. This initiative aims to enhance the skills and qualifications of Arab youth for careers in tourism, leveraging Spain’s extensive experience in the sector. Such a project would not only boost Marbella’s status as an educational hub but also foster cultural exchange and create long-term connections between Spanish and Arab communities.
Mayor Muñoz took the opportunity to highlight “the friendship that unites Marbella and the Arab countries” and expressed gratitude to the ATO for “having chosen our city for the granting of an award of such relevance.” She noted the increasing number of Arab tourists choosing Marbella as their destination and their high loyalty rate, indicating a strong and growing market segment for the town’s tourism industry.
The mayor also mentioned Marbella’s recent accolade as the Best European Destination to visit in 2024, awarded by European Best Destinations. This dual recognition from both European and Arab organizations underscores Marbella’s rising profile on the international stage and its appeal to diverse tourist demographics.
Jamal Satli Iglesias, the main advisor of the Arab League Tourism Organization and president of the Bluebay group, was also present at the ceremony. Mayor Muñoz acknowledged his contributions, praising his “work as a great ambassador of the city.” This recognition highlights the important role that private sector leaders play in fostering international relationships and promoting Marbella’s interests abroad.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Al-Fuhaid expressed pride in presenting Marbella and its mayor with official recognition from the Arab League as a reference destination for the Arab world and of excellence throughout the world. He commended “the continuous provision of quality and luxury services that are provided in this town to these tourists” and expressed his desire to “continue to strengthen the permanent collaboration that exists between the areas of Arab and Spanish tourism.”
This recognition and the potential initiatives discussed mark a new chapter in the relationship between Marbella and the Arab world. As both parties seek to deepen their ties, Marbella is poised to benefit from increased tourism, investment, and cultural exchange. Meanwhile, Arab visitors and investors will find in Marbella a welcoming destination that understands and caters to their needs and preferences. This mutually beneficial relationship is likely to play a significant role in shaping Marbella’s future as a global tourism and investment hub.
